I'd not had a chance
to clip your toenails,
the nurses at the hospital
didn't do it
and then the undertaker came
saying there'd be an extra charge.
And Christine said,
Go clip them.
And I did. And though your forehead was cool to the touch
your feet under our duvet
were still warm after all these hours
and in peace I made them beautiful
before socking and shoeing them
in your loyal hippie sandals
for
the road ahead.
